Starting the Morning Off Right

Like any American, I enjoy a nice cup of coffee to start my day. Unlike normality, I also enjoy my coffee ICED, whether rain or shine, it has to be cold. 1/2 cup almond milk. 1/2 cup coffee over ice. That’s it and it’s good!

However, my love of coffee has only had a 3 year life, when I was first introduced to Starbucks overseas. Yes, you heard that right. I was on a missions trip…to another country, 15 hours away from my own state, where I first enjoyed my first true American coffee.  Needless to say that one trip brought into me a love of iced coffee (since my first “Starbucks order” was a Frappuccino ). Now a few years later, older (and hopefully wiser)  and more mindful of cash-flow and health,  I make it at home.

But coffee is not always the best “pick-me” up in the morning, even though I’d like to think it is. Water is always the best start to the day. For a creative person like myself, that often gets very boring.

Recently a dear friend gave us a juicer. Having had one a few years back (and between moves….who knows where it ended up!) I was grateful to have another one in my possession. My husband who loves juice thought this was a fantastic gift so our dilemma was solved– we got to juicing!

So in addition to a glass of water, a cup of coffee I’ve also started drinking FRESH juice. Today I’d like to share with you one of the newest recipes from the Balao household.

Here’s my latest juicing recipe -everything is approximate, alter amounts of each as you feel necessary. Once all the fruit is juiced, mix together in larger pitcher.

  • 4 peaches
  • 3 handfuls of spinach
  • 2 celery sticks
  • 3/4 of a cucumber
  • 4 carrots
  • 3/4 of a pineapple (fresh, cut and chopped)
  • Add 2 shots of Ningxa Red
  • 4 drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil

Prep the fruit by peeling, cutting and taking pits outs. I didn’t peel the carrots but stuck them straight in. The fibers left over from the fruits and veggies are added to my little garden outside as compost.

After a few days of juicing (just one glass in the morning, nothing too crazy) my system feels cleaner and I have more energy- even more so than coffee. I love my coffee but it does make me thirsty, so I have to…errr…want to drink more. We also use the juice for a quick and easy smoothie base.

The juice makes a good base for Mineral Essence. Grapefruit adds another delicious flavor.

I’ll now  add Mineral Essence. to it. I’m usually low on minerals so taking pumps me up. To hide the flavor I put it right in my juice plus 1-2 drops more of grapefruit. Delish! My system is back-on-track.
